A ride to the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes by camel allows visitors to soak in this unique and picturesque setting. Climb atop the sand hills around sunset as shadows grow and stars rise over the nearby dunes, making for a stunning canvas that any photographer will head home with. The camel ride is about 15 minutes round-trip, but it’s well worth it for its peace and quiet. A few million years ago, the area was covered by water, then sediment eroded from the land and settled on the bottom. It compacted over time and became a rock. The layers became compacted and cemented together by different minerals, mostly salt crystals, into stable structures. The dunes in the United Arab Emirates showed us how wind can create something that looks like it was made by a human, but isn’t. The formations got their shape in the remains of sand dunes left behind on the ocean floor. The wind direction changes drastically and with it, so do the dunes. This allows geologists to better understand the history of the land-forms and rock formations. These dune patterns are like works of art, each containing its own unique shape. Sandstone arches are natural arches formed from the weathering of sandstone by water. This location in Abu Dhabi is a great spot for a picnic during the early morning hours, and the evening is great for camping. The sand formations are extremely fragile, some have already fell victim to human negligence, so please make sure you appreciate them from a distance.
